Intro

Historically, these small countries have had a turbulent past, with superpowers on all sides - Ottomans, Persians, Soviets - vying for control over this geographically strategic region. With the Black Sea to the West, the Caspian Sea to the East and dramatic mountainous terrains to the North, this is undoubtedly a region of pristine natural beauty. Following independence in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, all three countries have sought to reclaim their rich cultural heritage, which can be traced back millennia.

Georgia offers sublime mountains, ancient Christianity, a delicious cuisine and one of the world's oldest wine-making traditions. Armenia was the world's first Christian nation and boasts beautiful lakes and a fascinating history. Azerbaijan is an oil-producing, Muslim nation sharing a language with Turkey and a religion with Iran; today it is a complex but intriguing mix of antiquity and modernity.

Georgia

Despite its small size, Georgia has an extensive heritage. Its complex history has resulted in a rich and diverse culture, transforming it into a country famed for its architecture, art and traditions of hospitality and cuisine. Medieval fortresses, churches and monasteries are scattered within green valleys and mountain scenery, while contemporary buildings highlight its rapid progression as a newly independent country.

Armenia

Set in the mountainous region of southern Caucasus, Armenia's past is as dramatic as its rugged landscape. One of the world's oldest civilisations, few countries have a history as rich or complex. With spectacular medieval churches and monasteries, breath-taking natural beauty and warm and welcoming people, Armenia's enticing culture is one that shows resilience and rebirth from its tragic past.

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is a country of contrasts. Mountains and mud volcanoes provide the backdrop to flatlands and lush orchids, while impressive contemporary structures contradict ancient stone-carved palaces and medieval streets. It is a country of progression, merging the ancient and the modern to redefine itself as a 'new' nation emerging from a turbulent past of historical empires and political turmoil.
