It is well worth considering timing your Peru trip to coincide with a festival. The spectacular Fiesta del Inti Raymi takes place near Cusco with traditional Incan rituals and processions. Semana Santa is celebrated one week before Easter and involves elaborate processions around the country. Puno week takes place in November where the appearance of the founders of the Incan empire is re enacted at Lake Titicaca.
Treks & Hikes
The Inca Trail is Peru’s most famous trek but there are plenty of other impressive hikes in the country. The challenging 5-day Ausangate Trek showcases some of Peru’s finest scenery. Navigate the depths of Cotahuasi Canyon (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon) where you can see hanging bridges, waterfalls and, with luck, the magnificent Andean condor. In northern Peru explore the enigmatic remains of Kuelap, a remote fortress-city, and other tantalising sights along with Gocta, the world’s third highest waterfall.
