Spend the morning touring the historic city centre of Quito. Visit the Basilica del Voto Nacional and walk the iconic Inca street known as Calle de las Siete Cruces to the Plaza de la Independencia, where you will see La Catedral de Quito. Visit the Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesús, before reaching Plaza de San Francisco. Enjoy a traditional lunch then the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore Quito at your leisure. Depart Quito and begin your journey to the Mindo Cloud Forest. Enjoy views of Pichincha Volcano, before stopping at Nambillo River, where you will take a short walk through the forest to observe the vegetation, including many orchid species. After checking in to your lodge, embark on optional activities including canopying and canyoning (please note some activities have an additional charge). Return to the lodge to observe hummingbirds and a beautiful sunset before dinner.

Today you will cross the Chocó cordillera and arrive in the pristine highlands of Imbabura province. Enter the inhospitable Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve, one of the most beautiful areas of the highlands, to visit the Cuicocha Lake for a short hike. After a box lunch, you will head down to the town of Cotacachi to browse the handicraft shops then transfer to Hacienda Pinsaqui for the evening. Overnight in Hacienda Pinsaquí.

After a hearty breakfast at the hacienda, drive a short distance to Otavalo indigenous market. After the market you will have lunch at a local restaurant then go to Peguche, for a rewarding walk to reach the Peguche Waterfall, keeping an eye out for the birdlife that inhabits the area. In the vicinity you will also visit the Huarmi-Maqui project to learn about the techniques used for many generations by the artisans to produce the beautiful textiles and carpets that you will have seen at the market. After this, return to Hacienda Pinsaquí for a good night's rest.

Travel to El Ángel Highlands and the Polylepis Forest. As you ascend to the highlands, passing Yaguarcocha Lake, the vegetation changes from the dry forest near Ibarra to the very wet highlands of El Ángel. The afternoon will be free to spend at your leisure. After dinner, enjoy an evening walk through the forest, where you will discover the legends surrounding the indigenous communities of the region. Begin the day with a hike through the surrounding forests, venturing into the highlands (minimum recommended hike time is two hours). Look out for the rare endemic and migratory species that inhabit this unique environment. Return to the lodge for lunch then visit the Laguna del Voladero for spectacular landscapes and great views of the Chiles Volcano. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure before you reconvene for dinner. Overnight in El Ángel higlands.

After breakfast, you will head south to the railway station in Ibarra and board La Libertad train for a special rail journey to the valley of Salinas de Ibarra and the Afro-Ecuadorian community that calls it home. At Salinas, you will be welcomed by traditional songs and invited to a freshly prepared lunch using local produce at the Gastronomy Centre, run by the community. After lunch, we depart towards Zuleta, located to the south-east of the imposing Imbabura Volcano. The route comprises secondary roads, passing the towns of La Esperanza and Agochagua, to finally reach Zuleta, where you will learn about several community projects relating to culture and agriculture. Spend the day enjoying the many activities on offer at the hacienda. These include hiking and trekking, biking, cookery and embroidery classes (please note some activities have an additional charge). Overnight at the hacienda.

The morning is at leisure to make the most of the activities at Hacienda Zuleta. After a relaxed lunch, you will depart for the town of Cayambe then ascend towards the cordillera to cross the Cayambe-Coca National Park. Upon your arrival at Papallacta, the rest of the day is at leisure to explore the surrounding highlands or relax in the thermal springs. Overnight in Papallacta.

After breakfast, depart for the Antisana Volcano and natural reserve, passing through the main square in Pintag, a charming Andean town named after a Caranqui chief. As you wind your way up through the fields, a giant path of broken rocks from a relatively young lava flow will lead you up to the former temporary home of naturalist and geographer, Alexander von Humboldt, Hacienda Antisana (at 4,120m). A box lunch will be provided during the excursion, as there are no restaurants within the reserve.On your return to Papallacta, the rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the surrounding highlands and thermal springs.
