Central Asia Medication Rules

Some countries in Central Asia have very strict rules regarding which medications can be brought in. Information below is correct to the best of our knowledge but if you are unsure about something or have critical medication you need to bring please ask us and we will check the latest regulations with our local partners.

Turkmenistan

Medication is a very serious topic in Turkmenistan. The government intends to make the  country free from smoking and drug taking. As a result, smoking has been prohibited in ALL public places, including streets, parks, airports and etc – practically everywhere except specially equipped areas (if any) in restaurants and hotels. The maximum amount of cigarettes a smoker may bring to Turkmenistan is two packs (not more than 40 cigarettes)

Please also ensure your baggage when entering Turkmenistan DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY medications containing tramadol, codeine, morphine, opiates or any other similar constituent component that may be considered as narcotic drug or psychotropic agent. All of such medications (in any form and quantity) have been prohibited from import to Turkmenistan or transfer across the country’s territory – the fact the traveller may have a written and authorised prescription from a licensed doctor WILL NOT COUNT. Discovery of any of the above mentioned agents can be considered as smuggling of narcotic drugs and may result in very serious problems both for the person that carries them and for those transporting them.

Uzbekistan

It is necessary to know which medicines can give rise to doubt or even cause penalties for the drugs being not declared during crossing the customs border of Uzbekistan.
If you intend to bring medications to Uzbekistan, you must declare them on arrival and departure from Uzbekistan in customs declaration form and bring the doctor prescription in your native language. Not declaring the medication containing narcotic and psychotropic substances or absence of doctor’s prescription may be subject to criminal charges.
Study the detailed list which is used by customs officers during checking of your baggage. If the medicines found in your baggage aren't specified in the customs declaration, it could be considered reason for detention.
