Intro

Known as PNG to locals, it is perched on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and contains the earthquakes and volcanoes to match - as well as dense, impenetrable jungles and steep mountainous terrain. Needless to say PNG’s geography and geology throw up huge natural challenges. There are no roads from the capital city, Port Moresby, to any of its other towns. Welcome to PNG!

With substantially more languages than any other country, in large part due to its difficult geography, PNG represents diversity and culture writ large. Its highlands were only “discovered” by the outside world in the 1930s - to the astonishment of both sides. The breadth of its tribal groups and ancestral traditions – across its vast highlands, through its lower lying river-crossed inlands, along its shores and across its array of islands - is unparalleled.

Its seemingly endless shorelines and crystal waters make for superb snorkelling and diving, its collection of birds of paradise is truly unique, and its rainforests and mangroves are abundant in indigenous flora and fauna. Despite all of this, the number of visitors to PNG remains small. Foreign miners and missionaries outnumber tourists. In one of the world's most remote destinations, new discoveries await in the untouched lands of PNG.

NOTE: While technically part of Australasia rather than Asia, we have classified PNG under Asia for the purposes of finding it on our website.

Why travel with us ?

Papua New Guinea is an incredible but tricky destination. The same geography that bequeathed its incredible diversity makes travel challenging. Patience and understanding are a must when travelling in PNG. Working with our very experienced local partners we have devised a small group tour that takes in the best of PNG but also takes into account its difficult geography, the possibility of delays and thus minimises the chances of missing any of the key highlights if delays do occur. This is a delicate balancing act but we feel that our small group tour itinerary achieves this. We continually calibrate this to changing conditions on the ground as well as feedback from travellers, local partners and our own trips to PNG.

For those looking for a tailormade itinerary we will be happy to accommodate. Again PNG is tricky for tailormade tours.  Tours need to be planned plenty of time in advance, and allowances need to be made for delays with flights, roads etc. But it is completely worth it.

We work with the most experienced local partners, guides and the very best lodges in PNG to ensure your experience of this absolutely unique destination runs as smoothly as possible. Get in touch with one of our travel specialists if you have any questions or would like us to customise a tour around your requirements.
