Oman, fabled as the land of Sinbad, has quite the maritime tradition. Sat along two strategic sea routes of the ancient Silk Road, its coasts were captured by the Portuguese and the country grew rich from the trade that passed its shores. Lucrative frankincense from Oman's southerns shores reached as far as Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The country's coasts are also the perfect place to see dolphins and nesting turtles.

Oman's interior is rich in history and tribal tradition, and hospitality is an almost sacred duty. Coffee, dates and a warm smile await every visitor. Imposing medieval fortresses dominate the landscape, and beautiful wadis provide water to sometimes parched lands. Its vast deserts peopled by Bedouin tribes and their camel herds, and its varied mountain landscapes enchant photographers. Dhofar, Oman's southern province, sees few visitors but offers sea-venturing camels, coconut trees and traces of Oman's ancient links to Africa.
