Intramuros is the oldest district and historic centre of Manila. Originally founded in 1571, the city had been invaded many times over the years by Chinese pirates, and Japanese, American, and British forces. At its peak, Intramuros instilled fear into Spain's enemies and was the only city of its kind in Asia. It survived until WWII, where it was destroyed by US bombs during the Battle of Manila.

Day 2 : Manila

Early morning drive to Mount Pinatubo, where you will start the 2 hour trek to the volcano's crater lake. On return, visit the Aeta community who survived the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Return to Manila.

Overnight in La Casita Mercedes, Manila

Meal plan: Breakfast & lunch

Located on the island of Luzon, Mount Pinatubo lay dormant for almost 500 years until a devastating eruption in June 1991. One of the most destructive volcanic eruptions of the 20th century, more than 700 people were killed while thick deposits of tephra and lahar caused significant damage to surrounding cities. The eruption emmited millions of tonnes of sulfur dioxide gas into the atmosphere, decreasing the average worldwide temperature by almost 0.5 °C for years after. Although the volcano is still active, it is now safe to visit, with a beautiful crystal clear lake filling the crater.

Day 3 : Manila - Tagaytay

After breakfast, transfer to Tagaytay to enjoy a Taal trek, starting at the shore of Taal Lake before hiking to the island of Taal Volcano, where you will end the trek at the rim of the main crater lake. After the trek, drive back to Tagaytay where you will have lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy some more sightseeing. The evening is free to rest. Overnight in Tagaytay.

Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

An enormous prehistoric volcanic crater contains the spectacular sights of Taal Lake and the volcano that sits within, Mount Taal. Considered to be one of the world's deadliest, Mount Taal has claimed the lives of hundreds of local people. It's possible to take a tour to the top and view the yellow pool of sulphur that pushes clouds over the volcano.

Located along the Tagaytay Ridge, the relaxed town of Tagaytay is surrounded by beautiful scenery. It is one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines, attracting visitors with its stunning panoramic views over Lake Taal and into the craters of Taal Volcano. However, despite its increasing urbanisation and tourism development, agriculture remains an important part of Tagaytay's economy, with products including pineapple, coffee and bananas.

Meal plan: Breakfast & lunch

Home to black sand beaches, ancient buildings and beautiful religious architecture, Legazpi is known for its volcano Mount Mayon, the most active volcano in the Philippines. It is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and attracts visitors to its National Park where they get stunning panoramic views of Legazpi. Legazpi is also known as 'the city of fun and adventure' as there are plenty of historical buildings and ruins to explore such as the Cagsawa Ruins.

Considered to be one of the Philippines' best tourist attractions, Mount Mayon is only 15 kilometeres from bustling Legazpi. This mighty volcano is regarded as a 'perfect volcano' due to its almost symmetrical conical shape. The most active one in the Philippines, it has attracted many visitors to its national park. Mount Mayon's most destructive explosion happened in February 1814, when it belched out thick black ash which bombarded the town of Cagsawa and buried it completely. Its longest uninterrupted eruption was on June 23 1897 which lasted for seven days. Fire rained down on the surrounding settlements and the town of Bacacay was buried under the lava.

Reviews

Our trip was an amazing mix of the familiar and the exotic. We saw and did so much and came home feeling that we experienced the best of the Phillipines! Everyone we met was so warm and friendly, the tropical island waters were irresistible, and the 2000 year old rice patties of Banauae were breathtaking!
