Jordan's population stands at around 6.2m but is growing quickly due to a high birth rate and net migration. The population is overwhelmingly Muslim (about 92% Sunni; a further 2% Shia). Christians (Orthodox, Catholic and Coptic) make up about 6% of the population; this figure was once as high as 30% but has been steadily declining due to emigration. The population descends from Arabs predominantly and Arabic is the official language but English and French are also widely understood.
