Our Style of Travel

We love travel and exploring new and exciting destinations - getting under the skin of the culture, understanding the historical context and the political climate, and, of course, meeting the people to see what all this means in daily life. We do all we can to bring you these experiences - with as much comfort as we can along the way. Read on to discover what makes our trips so special.

Accommodation

A warm welcome, full of personality

Travel The Unknown will provide you with the best accommodation available, in keeping with the natural environments of our destinations. Traditional houses and camping are also arranged where appropriate.

Usually we focus on small, family-run hotels and lodges, where you will be personally catered to and your host will take care of your needs, as well as provide you with expert local advice and offer you their own insight on the local area. Location is also always a key consideration and we always take location, services and personality into account when choosing accommodation for our small group tour. On private tours we will of course be happy to customise according to your tastes.

Guides

Hand-picked guides - experienced & friendly

As seasoned travellers we have had many experiences of guides, some good, some bad. And we know that a good guide can be the difference between an unpleasant walk and a wonderful lifelong memory.

Thus we hand-select all of our guides. Our guides are locals with an intimate knowledge of the sites, peoples, customs, flora and fauna of their areas to ensure you get the most out of your travel experience. All of our guides speak English as well as the local language and you are encouraged to chat with them to enrich your travel experience. So whether a novice or worldly traveller, our guides will take care of all your needs. Just ask!

Solo Travellers

Getting the most out of going it alone

Having frequently travelled solo ourselves there were many times when we wanted to join tour groups, as it was a great way of meeting like-minded travellers, as well as getting to see some places that were otherwise not on our itineraries.

However we found that many tour companies discriminate against solo travellers by whacking up the price unfairly, just for the privilege of having their own room. In reality, we know that the cost to the company is a lot less than this hefty premium. That is why at Travel The Unknown, we try to keep our solo supplements down to an absolute minimum. You would only pay a supplement if you wanted your own room. If you are open to sharing a room with another single traveller, then you pay no supplement. What's more, it's a fantastic way of getting to know other people.

Flexible Travel

Packages and tours built around your needs

We realise there is no single right or wrong way to travel. That is why we are totally open to your suggestions and ideas, and where possible we will incorporate these on our off the beaten track tours. We have used the combined experiences of ourselves, locals, guides and other travellers in crafting our tours into a unique alternative travel experience and we want to ensure that our customers get the full benefit of our off the beaten track tours.

In addition to our exciting itineraries we also offer add-ons to enable an extra degree of customisation. Thus you can take in more conventional tourist sites in the country, or further explore off the beaten track destinations. If you have an idea, suggestion or question, please let us know.

Small group tours

A maximum of 12 travellers per tour

At Travel The Unknown we want to take you away from the crowded touristy places and off-the-beaten-track so you can explore the more unique and unknown places around the world. Travelling in small group tours allows for a more intimate experience with each destination but that is not the only reason we keep our maximum group size to 12. We are passionate about promoting responsible travel and the impact small groups have on a place is greatly less than large groups; the environmental and cultural impacts are more positive than negative because of this. On a personal level, you are more likely to meet like-minded people as well as make a genuine connection with your guide.
